How much would ice skating lessons cost? and how many would l need to take. l just wanna be able to skate, not become an expert just to be able to go around the rink on my own. I am absolutely hopeless. but l wanna be able to skate so much!!

You do not ultimately need lessons.just practice & someone supportive to help break ur falls.much like u probably did when u learned to ride a bike. This is exactly how l learned & it took me only about a month & a half to really do it well IE not look shaky at all & l was only 8 then.

You do also need to practice falling, perhaps even before u get on the skates: lean far forward & duck, try to land on ur knees & then ur hands (never ur elbows).or duck very low & let ur legs slide forward while u use ur hand to keep yourself from falling sideways.
BTW the reason aggressive inline skaters (esp ramp skaters often do not get hurt even on dangerous ramps is they know how to slide to a stop when they fall well.look at how aggressive skaters try to fall in skating videos & u will see what l mean they always keep a low center of gravity & try to ''slide'' when they lose control rather than kick/lean from side to side quickly or other bad falling techniques).

What u do need, though, is ankle support.it is best to do ankle raises & weight training involving ankles for a month or two before u try skating, it will make ur life much easier & keep ur feet from shaking from side-to-side & ''slipping sideways in opposite directions from under you''. :-)

l go to Polar Club which is a group class held once a week, it costs £5.80 & is half an hour long, after the lesson u can stay on the ice as long as u want until 12 o'clock. i've done these lessons for a year & i'm pretty good. another option is private lessons which cost around £5 for quarter of an hour, this means u will get better quicker & only do what u want. alternativly u can just teach yourself by trial & error. it really depends on how much u want to learn on how long it will take. if u only want to be able to skate forwards & backwards it could take up to a couple of weeks if u go regulary. l would really recommend going to group lessons because they r really good & u meet loads of nice people, & u can drop out whenever u want. the only problem with having group or private lessons is that ur teacher will probably want u to invest inm some good skates instead of the horrid hire skates. skates can cost about £70. however at ur local ice rink they will have a notice board where u can bye used skates cheaply. l think that if u want to be able to skate properly with bending ur knees & ankles, keeping ur back straight etc - rather than walking - it could take several hours to master. l hope u enjoy ur ice skating!
=)

If u just want to learn the basics.forward & backward skating..check with ur local rink & see if they offer a basic skills program. The lessons r group lessons & teach the basic skills needed for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just recreational skating. It is a quick & easy way to learn how to skate & make a few friends in the process.

The price & length vary by location. For example, lessons here r 45 minutes on Saturdays for 7 weeks. It is $95 for the session. You can just take the first few sets to get going on the basics, or keep going if u want to go into any of the various ice sports.

Have fun!

If u r based in the UK, the group lessons here r called ''SkateUK''. l have put a link in resources to the NISA website (National Ice Skating Association) which has a few more details on, & also a link to the syllabus so u can see what u would learn.

For example, my rink does a block booking that lasts half a term, so generally about six lessons & for about £50-60. The lesson lasts for half an hour, & u get some practice time after.

You work through a basic syllabus, that takes u through 10 levels, covering everything from sitting & standing on the ice, basic skating, backward skating, all the way through to forward & backward crossovers, two foot spins & even a basic step sequence on the last level.

At the end of the six weeks (at my rink anyhow), the instructor will look at the elements u have learned for that level & check u r ready to go up to the next level. They may even move u up a couple of levels, depending on how fast u progress. Obviously, u can do as many levels as u want - u might choose to do only the first few. But l warn you, it is highly addictive!

It is a fun way of either starting to skate well for figure / hockey / speed skating, or if u just want to get a good grounding in the basics to make u a proficient skater.
