For a while now my knees, especially my left have been hurting a lot. l talked to my doctor and she is reccommending me to a sports specialist but it will be a while before I will be able to see him. I am skating two days a week for August and I've been off my knees for three months now but they have not gotten better. My coach works me really hard and even though she is great for many reasons, she is blown it off more than once; she does not think it is a big issue. l really wanna skate, but I am sick of getting off early and sitting on the bench wincing in pain. Should l wear a brace? What should l do? My doctor believes that both my patellas are not quite aligned. The pain is behind the knee and around the kneecap. Unfortunately, l can not take that much time off, because I am in the summer skate session and it is quite expensive. l probably injured it falling off my Loop attempts and Salchows. My teachers would not let me not run in my school is track and field competition and afterwards l could barely walk, even though l only did the 100 m, which probably aggravated it. Still, we're seeing a very good specialist and it could take months to see him. My doctor believes that both my patellas are not quite aligned. The pain is behind the knee and around the kneecap. My coach is glad that it does not hurt, but she and the others found it hilarious when l said that it was only a matter of time. Still, when l run on it it aches.

you need to rest your knees before you make them worse

Take off for about a week, and wear a brace when you skate again. Try to get one that has plastic supports on the side, because metal restricts movement too much. Mine is ''Futuro'' brand, and it is black and grey.

QUIT skating, wear a brace(s) and let it heal otherwise you will have problems with it the rest of your life. It is a very big deal if your not allowed to let your body heal. also use an ice pack, for a bit then use a heating pad right after. do this several times a day or as often as you can. and yes definately see the specialist.

l would suggest taking off for a little while. Do u know what is causing ur knee pain, & where is the pain? Depending on where ur knee hurts depends on what type of brace would be helpful, & if one would even be helpful at all. If u have jumper is knee one of the patella straps is very helpful, it allowed me to skate with no problem at all. Also after l injured my knee in gym class l was able to wear a different type of brace which helped with my knee cap tracking (which was off, & was never back on until l had surgery a year later, but it was also partially a genetic problem with my knee). l know how hard it is to stay off the ice because of an injury, my last two years have been that way. It is important to take the proper rest so that u do not cause more problems to ur knee & make ur recovery longer, & more painful. Especially since ur coach works u so hard, it is important that u know ur body well enough to know when to skate or when skating is too much. l would probably suggest taking off until ur knee begins to feel better, because u can damage it more by skating.

If l were you, I'd definitely stay off the ice for a week or two (or at least until u see a specialist). Unfortunately, figure skating is a sport that places huge demand on our bodies. There is a high chance that u could have tendonitis or bursitis (which r two common injuries in figure skating). Its not worth risking more serious injury by continuing to skate on an existing injury. Your body is in pain for a good reason--something is not right. Please listen to ur body & take it easy.
Best of luck, Miche

you should not be skating. l ahd bad hamsting injuries and l skated on them and it took 3 months before l could get back on the ice. even then l was not able to do everythin that l wanted. l got new proflex boots a few weeks ago and they reallly help with knee/hip problems if you are a high level skater.

#1 You r in pain. #2 You already took time off & it has not gotten better #3 Your doctor thinks it is serious enough to recommend u going to a specialist. #4 The day u actually feel fine is when u STILL have to be careful not to reinjure or aggravate what is still in the healing process.
Just STOP!! Stop skating & running until u have that appointment with that specialist. You do not want to take any chances . . . a misaligned patella - ur knees r everything -not just for sports but for everyday life!! No matter how careful u r on the ice, those silly slips may happen or maybe someone can run into you. Why take the risk of possibly making the condition worse?
See if u can get on a list in case one of the specialist is patients cancels . . . maybe u can get in to see him earlier.
Get a medical excuse from ur doctor to give to ur school regarding running. Then ur teachers will take ur knee matter more seriously. Shame on anyone for making u do strenuous physical activity at this time or blowing it off. Your pain is real.
Please take extra good care of ur knees til u find out what is going on with them!!!

l personally would not skate. Your injuries will only get worse. But sonce theses skate lessons ar expensive try ur best to take it easy & try taking a pain releiver or sports pad. It will help with ur pain a lot more. Professional skaters have injuries & they skate it through but some get worse injuries & reitre. So take it easy & get sport pads or like a sports cream or pain reliever. l am sure u can get a refund or something if u temporarly wuit because of injury. If the doctor tells u to stop skating try ur best not to. Good luck!

l am a skater & so is my friend. My friend had this problem with her knee & it sounds similar to yours. The Doctor gave her a flexible brace that is skin colored for her disease. The disease she has is called Condumalsia (if l spelt that right) & her right knee hurts often (she is also a runner). She still skates on it but has the same trouble as you; with the aching & tame pain. If ur coach is tough on you, u should get ur mom or dad to talk to her & tell her that u r not able to skate on it. But if it is not acheing when u skate anymore thats good. Ice & heat always help a little. Does one leg hurt more than the other? If so l would recommend a temporary splint/brace (like my friend had). But if this is not what ur doctor recommends for a skater, than no.
Ask ur doctor these specfic questions u have & u will most likely get ur !
Best Wishes!
