if you have a coach or someone with you, have them catch you as you land and then youd learn how to land it off without falling or anything and then youd have a perfect axel

When you're on the harness, just totally go for it. That is what it is there for. You're not going to hurt yourself as ur coach is there to catch you. So make the most of ur time on the harness . . . go for the feeling of doing it full force!

So if u can ''almost'' do it on the harness, u should be able to do the same without the harness. I've been there . . . seems like without the harness, u hold back & do not get into the jump as bravely. If l got stuck on a jump, it was often because l kept doing the same thing over & over (getting too comfortable with my ''almost'' technique). If each time u could go for it a little more (to the point you're a wee bit scared), u might build ur confidence up to totally go for it!

My general axel tips:

You need to get the height in ur jump before u rotate. Remember the higher ur jump, the more time u will have to rotate in the air to make ur landing.

Make sure ur shoulders/hips r level . . . bend that take off knee in ur entrance. Make sure the shoulder on ur take off side does not creep back, otherwise ur hip will follow & cause u to prerotate. Do not prerotate - besides the fact it would be cheated, you'd be jumping sideways & wo not get the height.

Jump UP - not around. Use ur arms to help u lift up. Kick ur free leg straight through & think of putting ur knee up (not out like a waltz jump). Last thing to leave the ice is that toe pick. At the height of ur jump, bring ur arms in & cross ur legs into ur back spin position (essentially a loop) . . . stand tall in the air & not break at the waist.

Practice axel entrance / back spins. Same thing to say waltz jump/ back spin, but if u say axel entrance, that will get ur knee up (unlike a true waltz jump). When u jump, think to cross ur legs & be in back spin position before u land. Try to stop ur back spin with a check out at the right time as u would for axel. You can do this off ice as well . do a couple side hops for momentum before u step to jump.

Hope u get that axel soon!

Personally, the harness just makes it harder for me because u get dependent with any jump. When u r going into it, u have to be on an outside edge. This may feel weird a few times but it gives it more height & is correct. Also, u need to really bend ur knees & make sure ur last thing off the ice is ur toes. You need to pretend u r stepping up on something to get the kick through that u need. And, u must checkout on the way down so u r prepared to land. Some of it might be psychological though. Always know that u r going to land it because if u feel unsure than u probably won't.
