Whenever l do hamstring stretches, splits, or spirals off the ice, my knee sometimes hurts near the end of the stretch or when l come out of it. l usually hold the stretch around 25-30 seconds. Could the pain be from doing something wrong during the stretch? Or is it from my knee not being really good? Because there was one year when l was younger that my knee would start hurting for no reason at all but it went away by itself. (I am currently 16 right now) l do ice skating about 4-5 times a week but I am currently only doing waltz jumps, salchows, toe loops, and loops so l do not think that is what is causing my pain.

Since you sound like you are a serious athlete, instead of asking YA, you really should be going to a doctor that specializes in sports medicine. If you some how injured the knee and do not get it looked at soon,it could turn into a serious permanent problem. good luck.

Hey l have the same problem & l saw a doctor a year after the pain started. Where is ur pain? Can u add it with additional details?
l have medial collateral ligament injury, strained some tendons, & microscopic tear to ligament.
Ligament injuries take from three to four months to heal. Tendon injuries need to be taken care of if not they will become chronic[like mine, & l am only sixteen].
l think the cause of ur pain is from a new injury. l doubt it is from that year when it hurts. Since u have no idea u injured yourself, u continue stretching. It sounds similar to me. l was in dance when that happened & after physiotherapy, l moved on to skating.
Try not to overstretch. You must see a doctor for this. Knees r complex & l am not reliable since l am not trained for this, nor anyone else here without a physical examination.
Keep off ur stretch if u can [ l know l cannot], or at least try to stretch lesser with instructions.
It could be from growth spurt. Teenagers, especially girls, have knee problems that will eventually go away.
In the meantime, land softly, & do more strengthening so that u will put less weight on ur knee & distribute the impact for other muscles to absorb it. l find that spins & three turns give my knees more problem. Yes, knees. You must see a doctor, otherwise ur uninjured leg will bear most of ur body weight & eventually become injured.
Remember to bend ur knees will landing to soften the impact.
Apply cold pack, but not too cold to the area 20 minutes a day. Massage gently as well.
Please see a doctor. You r young. My physiotherapist said that l seem to be an old lady. Once again, l am only sixteen, & l know u do not want ur injuries to last!
NB. Tell ur doctor when it happened & the sports that u r doing.

Whenever u do any stretches or moves, u need to make sure ur knees r aligned over ur foot . . . in otherwords, ur knee & foot need to be pointing in the same direction. Sometimes in a split or spiral (or a move like spread eagle or ina bauer), u r actually twisting/torking ur knee more than it can truly handle - so that may be the cause of the pain. Locking the knees (especially when it is not aligned with the foot) puts a lot of pressure on the them as well.
If u bend ur knees & look straight down, ur knees should be going over ur foot. Most people do not have it completely aligned . . . the knees got outward or inward. So it is possible that the knee could be tweeking a bit in a jump take off or landing, or even in a sit spin. Some guided strength & stretch training could help with that.
If u can, get some strength/stretch instruction (from an instructor, not a book or website) to learn proper body alignment. If the pain is continues or gets worse - do see a doctor.

Where exactly is ur knee bothering you? It is possible that ur knee could be misaligned when u r stretching, make sure that ur knees & ur toes r aligned ( l have a big problem with this, but strengthening exercises has helped with my one knee, unfortunately l did surgery on my other knee before l had done too many of these exercises). It also could be that ur growth plate is impacted a little bit which can cause a lot of pain, u can use a patellar strap http://amazon.com/Adjustable-Jumpers-Knee-Strap-Patella/dp/B000S9RA6K which can help with the pain. Also working with an off ice instructor could be very helpful for strengthening & making sure that u r doing off ice workouts. Does ur knee ever bother u on the ice while skating? l would suggest seeing a doctor if this problem persists.
