well do not buy hockey skates as a lot of rinks will not let youngsters wear them for usual skating,figure skates are the best,have you contacted your local ice rink?when l worked at an ice rink we had a book of second hand skates being sold.at lot of kids think they will like it and try it twice and give it up as a bad idea.sorry l can not remember any brand names.but again ring an ice rink and they can advise you.

l would Highly Suggest Jackson for figure skates. New they run about 80$ & up, but u can get them used for as little as ten bucks, just check a local pro shop or rink in ur area.

l suggest Riedell if it is your first pair. They seem to be good with beginners. Personally l had Risports for my first pair and they were not great. If there is not any that take your fancy, maybe Jackson of Graf?

It is not a good idea to buy skates off E-bay unless u already know what type to buy. For example: ''Gam'' skates fit skaters with a wider foot. ''Jackson's'' fit skaters with a wider heel. ''Ridell's'' r more narrow, as r ''Wifa's''. Skates need to be properly fitted. If u do not want to buy new skates, some skate shops sell ''gently used'' skates, which allow u to be fitted with different types.
It is always an option to ''pick the brain'' of a skate shop professional & become familiar with what ur skater needs & then go shopping around for what u both agree ur skaters need. It is always better to be informed as skates r a big purchase & so important to how the skater performs.
It is also important to consider the blade type as well. If ur skater is a beginner, this is not as important at this point but u do not want a blade with a large pick for a beginner.
