l am done humiliating myself trying to learn on public outdoor rinks. Do any indoor rinks help clumsy idiots like me learn?

All indoor rinks provide paid tuition.

You will have to put down that banjo first.

l think it would help if you wore figure skating skates, not ice hockey skates as they have the toe pick at the end which makes it easier to grip the ice and push off from when you are learning.

An ice rink would be a good place to look for that sort of thing.

why do not you start in the summer and learn rollerblading first?

Most ice-rinks have some sort of tuition - either paid or voluntary !

Check out your local rink to see if they offer this service - l learnt to skate when l were a mere lad of 13 ( l am now 46 !) and still go occasionally !

l may not be the best person to give advice as l only went ice skating once & ended up off school for a week with infected ankles. ( due to minging hired boots & my natural knock -kneed style )

Most rinks, unless they're outside, r open year-round. Call ur nearest rink & ask about Group lessons. They r a controlled & focused way of learning to skate during a session set aside just for that purpose.

If u decide to go for lessons, u will be placed in a Beginner is Group.
Depending on the rink, most Groups run 7 - 8 weeks, once a week, 1/2 hr. in length.

You will learn the Basics - Emphasis: Making sure you're wearing the correct skate size, skates should be tied correctly, wear thin socks, how to enter the rink, how to fall & retrieve safely, beginning ''baby'' steps on the ice going forward, proper balance, head, arms & posture positioning, trying to overcome nerves.

Depending on how well u progress within Beginners u could even start skating backwards-slowly. Do not think of yourself as being clumsy-everyone who is been skating for years, including Pros, started out the same way-struggled & stumbled.

The key to skating is understanding where & how you're balanced. When u achieve that - all other elements, i.e. proper stroking, forward one foot glides, will come through, with time & practice.
