l plan to keep my ice skates in good condition.with all those skate care products out there, l wanna know what things are necessary to do to your skates. like polish, boot shine, ect. l just wanna keep them in good condition so the are usable, but l do not plan to resell them.so what stuff is necessart to do besides sharpening the blades

so what should l do to take care of the boot and the blade without spending much or none at all

this is what l already do.

use boot covers, blade covers & guards, and polish the blades once in a while with veg oil

no what you do sounds good. maybe you could polish them before every competition.

You sound like you are doing everything necessary to keep them in tip top condition, but the bottom line is that figure skates are only supposed to last about 3 years when you skate in them consistently and practice all the time.

You sound like you are doing everything you need too! Just make sure you are wearing your hard-guards everytime you are off the ice! If you do not allready l suggest using 2 pairs of hard guards- one for going to the ice and one for coming off the ice. This way the gaurds are fresh and not wet each time (which can cause the blades to rust). It is great you are so concerned about the care of your skates! Keep on skating =]

be careful how you lace your boots, if you do it wrong it will make them deterriorate faster.

always keep them dry after use

polish the skate itself with shoe polish to help prevent water damage.

You Can Also use skate tape which is not very expensive

After u get home from skating, u can take the skates out of their bag, take the soakers off, & let them air dry for a few hours. That is good for both the blades & the boots (since ur feet will sweat in the boots when u skate). Put the soakers back on them when u put them back in the bag to protect the blades.

The boots will get nicked as u skate in them more. You can polish them if u want, or use skate tape or boot covers. Honestly, l do not do anything about the nicks (unless they're deep - then l put polish over them). l just wear over-the-boot tights for tests & comps so no one will see my nicked up skates:)

Every once in a while, check that the screws in ur blades r tight with a screwdriver.

You can take out the laces & wash them if they get dirty. Or buy new ones.

Finally, if u have leather bottoms on ur boots (not plastic soles), be sure to waterproof the bottoms about twice a year at the least. That will help keep the bottoms of the boots from rotting. You can buy sno-seal for this at most skating stores/websites. It does not cost much at all, & u really need to have it if u have leather soles.
