you see the first time that l ice skated l did pretty well on my own but l had to hold on to the rails for a few minutes. But now every time l get on the ice l cant skate without holding on to the rails anymore l dont know why but should l take some lesons? it is kind of fruastrating.

If u really have the will & desire to skate, l would encourage u to sign up for group lessons. It is not that expensive & u will have skating experts to help u with ur problems.
Make sure ur skates r not to big or small on you. Either one could make it difficult for u to skate.
If u r using rental skates, l would suggest u take the time & try on many pairs & walk around the mats & make sure ur heal is not lifting & ur toes r laying flat & u can walk without ur ankles turning out.
Once u find the pair that u like, write down the boot number & ask for that particular skate when u skate next. Hint. Ask for the skates that r high on the rack. They usually r not used as much & ur blades might not be worn down as the others.
Good Luck!

Take a few lessons to build your confidence. Lessons will improve your skills and you may learn a few things other than just forward skating! :) Wow your friends with backwards skating, 3-turns, stops and maybe even a two-foot spin. Lessons are fun and a great way to meet new friends.

just let go of the boards. Its definitely possible and if you fall just get up and try again. Do not get frustrated, it is really hard at first for everyone.

if u r really interested in skating, invest in some group lessons. u will be able to gain more confidence (and yes, let go of the boards). u will also learn proper techniques like how to get up correctly, bending ur knees, proper posture etc. & also, practice makes perfect. when l first started skating (before taking lessons), l would hold on to the rail, let go, & then take about 3 steps & see how far l can glide before holding on the to railing again. & it was just a repetitive process until l felt confident enough to glide longer on my own without needing the railing. hope this helps.

If you want the lessons then have a try, they are great help. But if not, just keep skating with your hands on the rails until you feel confident, then just hover them slightly above the rails so you can grip on if you're going to fall. Gradually move further and further away until you do not need them anymore. Have fun, and be confident in yourself!

l personally think that taking lessons is great. l only started skating recently & have gone to 3 lessons & have improved heaps. l dont hold onto the sides any more because we get taught little tips & tricks.we got shown a way of skating & she said that if we did it that way, we would never fall down...i have not fallen down yet while im away from the sides.. (i used to hold onto the sides all the time & hated going a few steps without the rail.) a coach/teacher will also motivate u & set goals for u to try.
i love it & l reckon u will too. xx
p.s the main reason l started lessons was becuase l would rather fall on my butt in front of a few rather than a whole rinkk full of people... much better in my opinion :)

it is true. no matter how good u are, lessons really help a lot because u will get educated about the do is & don'ts. this will help u form the right habits & avoid forming wrong ones. if u find taking lessons too expensive, perhaps u can ask a friend who knows the proper way of skating or watch instructors teach introductory lessons. or maybe u can look for new friends who r having or have had formal coaching. perhaps they can share the basics with you!
about the ice skates, l agree that it is important to wear the right size & tie them the proper way. it would be good to ask some assistance. some basic pointers. the boots should be just the right size. the laces should be pulled to make the boots hug ur feet just right. the tongue (flap) should not be pushed inside but must be completely pulled out (must be done before even tightening the laces). & the laces must be firmly tied. ankle support (ankle part of the boots) should be stable & not loosely tied. the top part where u tie the laces must be properly secured bec. if it is loosely tied, the lower parts of the lacing will also eventually loosen up. the best way to know if it is properly tied? stand up. if you're comfortable & stable even when u walk, it is probably properly tied ;-) the challenge should not start outside the rink. it should start once u step ur foot on the ice =D
i hope u finally get that glide back!
good luck!
